On a cold January 19, 2008 the ORM said farewell to the C&O caboose it acquired in 1999 by donating it to the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. This caboose was built for the Hocking Valley (HV) Railway by the Standard Steel Car Company in 1924 and it worked many years for the HV and its successor, the Chesapeake and Ohio or C&O.
The ORM acquired the caboose in 1999 from the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) and was moved to the ORM in September of 1999. After eight years of sitting in the ORM yard and with no plan of restoration, it was decided to de-assess and donate the caboose to the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway (HVSR) in Nelsonville, Ohio. The HVSR operates on track this caboose once used when it worked for the HV and the C&O. The HVSR plans on restoring the caboose to its original condition and then using it for special occasions.
In order to remove the caboose, an erecting company from Logan Ohio was brought in to lift the caboose from the ORM mainline and onto two low boy flat bed trucks. One flat bed was used to move the caboose body and the other was used to move the cabooses trucks. Once the caboose and its trucks were loaded and secured they departed for Nelsonville and hopefully a better life.
